10 Tips To Bring Your Site on Top

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of optimizing a website so that it performs well in organic search. Ranking highly for search terms which are known as keywords increases the visibility of a website and leads to a higher number of visitors to the actual website.

Put more simply, SEO will allow you to connect with those searching for your product or service and help turn them into customers.

As a business owner you need to have a plan in place to promote your business and obtain new clients.

There are several hundred techniques to achieve higher ranking in the search results, but these Top 10 SEO Tips are the most valuable and timeless.

Research and Find the Best Keywords

Optimize your site for the keywords that are being searched on the search engine and the actual product or content that the user is looking for. Google calculates the number of times users did not select your listing and the number of times they returned to the search results to choose a different website.

Therefore you should invest some resources into finding the best keywords; those that turn searches into purchases or leads.

Find What Your Competitors are doing

Analyse your competitor’s website for incoming links and keywords.

Your analysis of competitors should include these extremely important linking criteria, such as:

  1. Competitor rank in the search engines
  2. Find out if competitors are doing anything better than you and how you can beat it
  3. Look under the hood their search and marketing optimization strategy and see what you can legally steal
  4. Quantity and quality of incoming links
  5. What keywords are in the title of linking page?
  6. % of links containing specific keywords in the link text
  7. The Google Page Rank or Moz Rank of linking pages
  8. Popularity of the linking domain and the linking page (measured by links & mentions)
  9. Get inspiration for new ways to connect with customers and improve customer retention
  10. Improve your own plans to beat the competition based on data rather than assumptions

Content should be Very Linkable & Sharable

Generic content can’t get high traffic and ranking in today’s online marketing world. The content can have these attributes if you want to earn and sustain higher ranking in the search engine results –

  1. The content is useful
  2. The content is original
  3. You can’t help but link to it
  4. There are supportive facts and references
  5. There’s enough detail that nobody can memorize it
  6. Include something fun or interesting (like video)
  7. Include an offer, discount, or promotion
  8. Include enough call to action (CTA) to invoke engagement
  9. Make the content  visually appealing with infographics , charts, and references

Title and Meta Tags should be Optimized Properly

Use different HTML Titles and meta tags for every page of your website. This will ensure that most search engines  store and list your pages in the search results.

Your Homepage Title and Homepage Meta Description should be optimized properly. You should get your most important keywords into your homepage title and meta description and also that shouldn’t look spammy and is a clear indicator of what your website is about.

Your Headings and Subheadings should be Optimized Properly

Headings have an important role in organizing information, so be sure to include ONLY ONE H1 tag when assembling your page, and optionally using one or more subheading (H2-H6). Since a page full of headings would look just plain silly, my SEO tip would be to fill in the blank space with paragraphs, ordered and unordered lists, images, and other content. Try to write at least 400+ words on each page.

 Use Title and ALT Attributes

Using the title attribute is a direct method of telling the search engines and the user more information about where a link will take them if they click through it.

Sample syntax might be:

<a href=” ” title=”SEO Services to Help You Get Higher Search Engine Ranking”>SEO Services</a>

The ALT Attribute is used for the same reasons as the title attribute, but is specifically for describing an image to the search engine.

 Optimize Your File Nomenclatures

Whenever possible, you should save your images, media, and web pages with the keywords in the file names. We have experienced improvement in ranking by renaming images and media. Your web page’s filename is more important, since many search engines now allow users to query using “inurl:” searches.

Include Robots.txt in your root directory

Optimize Your robots.txt File.  Include a robots.txt file at the root of your website. Open up a text editor  and type “User-agent: *”. Then save the file as robots.txt and upload it to your root directory on your domain. This one command will tell any web spider that hits your website to crawl and index every page of your website.

Also you should redirect duplicate content to your original page. Use rel=Canonical Tag to prevent duplicate content from appearing in the search engines. You should redirect all the duplicate content to your main website with a 301 Permanent Redirect.

Submit Static and XML Site Maps to the Search Engines

Optimize your Static Site Map.  Since every page on the website will be linked to the site map, it allows web crawlers (and users) to quickly and easily find content.

Use XML Site Maps. Create and submit your xml sitemap to Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. It ensures quick indexing of your web pages.

 Use Checklists and Validators

There are several ways to validate the accuracy of your website’s source code. The four most important are validating your search engine optimization, HTML, CSS and insuring that you have no broken links or images.

Page Load Time- How Does It Matter in Anyway?

Over the years, Google has cited multiple factors that would determine the organic ranking of the site. While some were related to the webpage content including the URL, web copy, titles, headers, etc. some stressed on the measurements of the authenticity of the website like the age of the domain, number and quality of inbound and outbound links etc. However, it was back in 2010 that Google announced is obsession with page speed. The search engine giant declared that website’s speed would be one of the factors that would impact the search ranking. According to Google, “Faster sites create happy users. Like us, our users place a lot of value in speed – that’s why we’ve decided to take site speed into account in our search rankings.” Read more »

Check If Your Website Is Competing With Itself

We all know how competition can bring out the best within us, but then, when the online marketers compete, they put in a bit more effort to improve quality, add more relevance to the campaign and connect with their potential visitors. However, the last thing that they want is to compete against their own website! The unintended act of pulling the target audience in more than one direction is termed as web or digital marketing cannibalization whereby the marketers fail to provide a distinct path to the visitors which can guide them to fulfill their goal but ends up in ruining their own results. Mentioned below are few of the flaws that lead to web marketing cannibalization.

Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Pinterest etc. – Social Cannibals

Social CannibalsSocial signals are important, but then, the social networks, instead of sending traffic to the website, might just be pulling your potential buyers away. When a visitor clicks on that social media icon in your site to ‘connect’ with you, it actually hampers the traffic statistics as they leave your website, go away from your products or services page and farther away from the lead generation form or shopping cart.

Webmasters can never think their websites to be perfect without having implemented the social media buttons. But they should actually realize why they want their visitors to go to their Facebook page? Does that in any way help their business? No, it does not. Connecting to businesses’ Facebook page actually helps the visitors to know about the company’s services, upcoming events and latest offers but it does not influence conversion.

If you have a social media plan strategized, you should go ahead and add the social media icon in your site. However, it is wise to keep it subtle in a proper position (recommended: footer). You need not go for visual prominence with all those bright colors or fancy icons.

Video Embedment- YouTube Cannibal

YouTube Cannibal

When the webmasters are linking its content to YouTube video, they are actually sending the visitors to the site that probably won’t send them back! Simply put, embedding YouTube video content, in most of the time, eats up conversions, especially if the video is ranking.

According to survey conducted with 95 companies having YouTube content which had some 900 million views, the click-through rate from YouTube to those company websites was just 0.72%. YouTube is very good at keeping their visitors and rarely offers referral traffic. YouTube being a giant and the second most popular search engine, it needs the webmasters to formulate a dynamic YouTube strategy, or else host the videos elsewhere. Using Vimeo or Viddler for hosting the video content can be viable.

Pages Competing with Each Other – Key phrase Cannibals

Ideally, the pages in the website must pin-point on specific topics and generally, the sitemap is designed with visitors and key-phrases in mind. It is the internal linking that guides a visitor from one page to the next.

keyword phrase stuffing and bad backlinks

Keyword Stuffing

Thus, if the webmasters fail to select specific phrases or target more than one key phrase per page, the relevance of the page will get diluted. Unarguably, it is always better to rank on page one of Google for a single phrase than to rank on page two or three for several key phrases.

So, if you are targeting more than one keyword per page, you are actually nibbling away your own search traffic. It is imperative to focus on the keyword usage on a page more distinctly and avoid keyphrase overlapping.

Simple Tips to Avoid Web Marketing Cannibalization

Here are some of the best principles to follow to avoid web marketing cannibalization:

  • You should always look to steer the audience from social networks to your site, not vice versa.
  • Unless you have an extensive YouTube optimization strategy, you must aim to keep video viewers on your site and away from YouTube.
  • Have a distinct call-to-action for each page.
  • Focus on a single keyphrase for each webpage.

Remember, the end goal of your marketing effort is converting the prospective leads into potential clients, so avoid including those elements in the site that would eat away your traffic.
